Ken Follett’s The Evening and the Morning is a prequel to the beloved Pillars of the Earth, but it doesn’t live up to the original. While Pillars felt rich and engaging, this book seems repetitive and predictable, more like a TV drama than real historical fiction. The story focuses on good characters constantly fighting against overly evil villains, which makes it feel too simple. The historical setting doesn’t feel real and seems like a stage for modern problems. Although Follett is a skilled writer, this book feels like it was written to meet expectations rather than with true passion. Fans of Pillars might find this disappointing, as it lacks the depth or magic of the first book.

The best of the excellent Pillars of the earth series. The 3 protagonists might be Follett's most fascinating characters yet. He is the master of medieval historical fiction. Ji

I had this book from my local library and LOVED it. For being the fourth book in series, it's actually the first book of the series, opening in the 980s. Highly recommend. Thank you, Phyllis
Another fav series by Follett.

Read this awhile back. Loved the Pillars series, and this is not a let down. Well researched and believably set in time and place but more importantly compellingly written. I fell in love all over again w Follett and his worlds of completely complex story and character development.
